Citizen Journalism

Citizen Journalism is a part of media that I think the average person overlooks too often.  Most people rely on major news sources, or accredited journalists to receive their information.  For many reasons, this is sensible.  It increases the chances that you are getting reliable information, because it is coming from a trained professional who is usually being edited by others who are knowledgeable and obligated to do their best to report truthfully.  However, often times these sources may not be reporting honestly or “freshly.”  They may just be sticking to a mundane style that presents facts, either biased or unbiased, about what is going on in the world.  Other times, this news may be unreliable because broadcasters are rushing to be the first to report or have the most exciting material.

There is something about citizen journalism that is naturally exciting.  Citizen journalists are reporting what they see around them because they feel passionate to do so, not because it is their job.  Often times, a citizen journalists’s post is motivated by true intrique and a desire to share their thoughts or findings with others.  Citizen Journalists are allowed to use their creativity in whatever way they please.  The do not have an editor, boss, or image that they have to answer to.  It is my opinion, that when people are interested in a topic, that they look to see if their has been any citizen journalists writing about that idea.  What a citizen journalists provides is a perspective that one cannot always get from a news source.  Even if their opinions differ from their readers, they are encouraging thought and debate.
